10 cleaning car hacks - Your Modern Dad

“Again?” I ask as I head outside to the van, ready with my squeegee and Spray Nine. With four kids, ages 10, 8, 6 and 4, our van is constantly in need of a good cleaning, because we use it every single day. Between school drop offs and pick-ups, car pooling friends, soccer, football, dance, wrestling, errands and just running around, it gets a lot of wear & tear. Not to mention that we use it for vacations, so think about all of the food, crumbs, and mess that you see after a vacation. Now that’s a whole other post!

Here are my favorite car cleaning hacks:

1- Move all of the seats up & then back to be sure that you get everything that is underneath the seats. I find that bottles, crumbs and plastic bags tend to hide under the seats, in the corners. I have to slide the seats all the way up and see what was hiding under the seat. Don’t get me started on the back seat- when the kids look under the back seat for me, they could fill up a garbage can (and we do this every Sunday).

2. Use Spray Nine to clean the car. It is a heavy-duty cleaner that is as tough as we are. I use it to clean almost every spot in the car. The middle console is always a mess, because this is where we put food, drinks, toys, crayons and more. Spray Nine cleans everything so it looks clean as soon as I’m done.

3. Clean the engine, too. I use Spray Nine because it is a degreaser, so it is tough on grime, grease & germs. Tip: wait for the car to be cool before you clean the engine.

4. Use a toothbrush to get into the vinyl, to get into all of the little cracks and creases. When the kids spill something on the mats that leaves grease, grime or stains, I use the Spray Nine and then grab an old toothbrush & scrub it. It kills the bacteria and gets rid of the mess. You may not have to do this, but I like to know that I’m getting into every little crevice, so I do this. I also do it on the place where the door meets the side, because that always looks messy.

5. Use a squeegee and a bottle of water to clean up pet hair. Spray the water on the seats (lightly) and rub the fur off with a squeegee. Do this on the seats and on the carpet areas.
