Four kids X four lunches X five days a week (school) = a lot of lunches! These 5 helpful tips when preparing school lunches are how Becky & I make it through the week with our sanity.
1) Get their snacks organized
In our pantry we have several baskets that hold different snacks for the kids. We have the snacks divided into categories:
BASKET ONE: Fruit cups, fruit pouches (mostly for the younger ones), dried fruit.
BASKET TWO: granola/protein bars, and crunchy snacks like pretzels and veggie sticks.
BASKET THREE: This one is in the refrigerator and it has yogurt, cheese sticks and cut up veggies in baggies, ready to go.
2). Pack lunches ONE TIME for the week (or month).
Yes, we actually do this. We go to the store, get a few pounds of deli meat and cheese. We buy pickles to go on the sandwiches. We make peanut butter at a local store that has a peanut grinder. We buy way to much bread & packs of buns and then we get going. We make them all and freeze them. In the morning, they grab whatever sandwich they want and toss it into their lunch box. It is thawed, but still cold, by lunchtime.
3). Buy mini water bottles and keep them in a DRAWER in the refrigerator for easy access. (We keep ours in the fridge in the garage).
4). Keep single Wet Ones® in the pantry, next to the snack baskets. Their rule is that they can take ONE every day and put it in their lunch box. They would take 20 if I let them (not kidding). Wet Ones® Antibacterial Hand Wipes actually clean up sticky hands, so I always include one. When soap and water isn’t handy (like in the school cafeteria), they can grab Wet Ones® Wipes to kill 99.99% of bacteria, wipe away grime and even have soft hands (thanks to the Aloe formula). Our favorite is the Fresh Scent.
5). Have them pack their lunches the night before or in the morning, but the key is that THEY pack it. They grab one thing from each basket, they grab one water, one Wet Ones® and one sandwich. They are responsible for putting it into their backpack.
