This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Withings, part of Nokia. All opinions are 100% mine.
I love the holidays. I love how Becky and I get to spend more time with the kids when they are out of school. I love how we drive around on cold nights, dressed in our pajamas…drinking hot chocolate, looking at Christmas lights. I love the smell of fresh cut pine trees outside and warm sugar cookies inside.
With all the things that I love about the holidays, the food during the holidays ranks up there with some of my favorite things. However, for the past 5 months, I have been working really hard to become healthier for my family and for myself. I completely changed my diet habits and my workout habits. I wanted to feel better, have more energy and be able to do more with the kids. While it may be hard to stay on track, here are 5 ways you can maintain a healthy balance during the holidays.
1) Stay Hydrated.
This was one of the hardest things for me to do when I first started down a healthy path, but it was also the easiest to fix. I always had a problem drinking water, because I like the taste of sweet tea better. However, I found then I started drinking more water, especially before and during meals, I felt more full. I was eating less at meals and staying fuller longer. When you think you are hungry for a snack, be sure to drink a large glass of water before you eat anything. Experts agree that many people mistake thirst for hunger, so just be sure that you are getting what you really need.
2) Set Limitations, not Restrictions.
This is something that I have come to love. Have you ever had a family member or a friend set huge restrictions on themselves when trying to live a healthy lifestyle? You know the no sugar, no carbs, no fun diet? The outcome…they end up eating half of that peanut butter cheesecake during Christmas dinner (guilty). Instead of setting restrictions, set limitations. Eat a smaller portion of that cheesecake or that cookie you had been eyeing at dinner. It will satisfy your cravings without adding on the extra guilt later on.
3) Monitor your weight at home.
One of the first things I did when deciding to become healthier was give myself the gift of a good scale. I went with the Withings Body Cardio Scale. It’s the world’s thinnest and most advanced scale. The High-accuracy measurements via Position Control ™ technology will help you set a weight goal and manage your daily caloric intake that you set for yourself and up to 8 different people.
Not only does it track weight, BMI, total body fat, water percentage, and muscle and bone mass, but it also provides Heart Rate and unique insights into arterial health with Pulse Wave Velocity assessments, something my old scale did not do.
Another feature of the Body Cardio Scale that set it apart is that it’s very durable. It has a solid aluminum base, heat-tempered glass, and the ability to be accurate on any surface. The battery is also rechargeable and can last up to a year. My favorite feature is that I can track my results with the Health Mate app right off my phone.
4) Set a realistic diet plan.
Setting a diet plan can be as easy as doing a google search online, or as extensive as meeting with a health care professional. Either way, find one that will work for you and your family. Make sure it fits into your fitness goals. In my case I wanted to lose weight at the beginning, so my diet plan was geared for weight loss. Today my diet plan has changed, and instead of losing weight I now want to increase my muscle mass and heart health so I had to change my diet plan to help achieve my new goals.
5) Get a fitness tracker.
Since I loved my Withings Body Cardio Scale, it was easy to make the choice to go with one of the connected family of products they offer, specifically the Withings Steel watch.
The Steel watch is a perfect gift for both men or women living a healthy lifestyle. It has the ability to track steps, running, distance and calories burned, has a swim tracker, monitors sleep and has a silent vibrating alarm, and also syncs with the Health Mate app that I can monitor from my phone. Not only do the high-tech low-fuss stainless steel and chrome features look great, but the watch is extremely durable and reliable. It has double-dome glass that makes it water resistant up to 5 ATM, and does not require you to charge it daily because the battery lasts up to 8 months.
