I wanted to post these 5 ways to get ready for the football season because this year is different for us. This year I am not PLAYING football. I’m not WATCHING football. This year I am COACHING football. Yes, I’m coaching our son’s team and I can’t wait to get in there & help. Here are 5 ways that we get ready for Football in our house.
1- Run every morning.
From July until football season starts, we wake up and run in our neighborhood. My wife takes the other kids and our dog on a walk while Jack (our 8 year old) and I run to get ready for practice. The worst thing that I could do would be to let him take the whole summer off and then ask him to go to practice and run laps – he would be worn out and would dread going. This way, his body will be conditioned for practice and for running.
2- Have them practice wearing a helmet.
They are heavy, uncomfortable and the kids hate to wear them, but they are a MUST. It sounds silly, but have your kids wear them around the house, even just to watch TV for 30 minutes. It just gets them more used to wearing them.
3- Get a shower BEFORE the game.
I always felt so much more energized and ready to go when I had a shower before the game and I encourage the kids to do the same thing. It just lets them focus beforehand. I use these “get game ready” grooming products (the kids like to use them, too, because they love the smell) I like the Suave Professionals MEN 2-in-1 and the shampoo and conditioner and I use the DOVE Men+Care scrub. They are all pregame products of the NCAA, too.
4- Watch football on TV.
This is a great time to bond with your kids and to teach them about the game. (I try to have my wife sit with me to learn a little, too. You would never know that she has been watching me play football since we were in high school.) You can watch this video of Demarco Murray, one of the top running backs in the NFL last year.
5. Practice hand and foot work.
Work on hand-eye coordination, by catching the ball. Work on quickness and footwork by doing little skills like running and switching positions quickly.
