So it all began in 1998 when I started dating the love of my life, Becky. We were high school sweethearts, engaged in college, and married a month after college graduation.
At the time, we thought life was tough… new jobs, moving away from home. We packed everything we owned into a 10ft. trailer and moved from the frigid winters of Pittsburgh, PA to the Southern life (Just a tall glass of sweet tea, Y’all) in our new home state of North Carolina. We were newlyweds with a mortgage, new careers, and no local family support system. However, we knew we had each other and that was all we needed and all was great…so we thought.
Here we are, four children later. Now life is REAL!
The past years have been filled with sleepless nights with countless 3:00 AM wake up calls of “Dad, I need some water.” That leads to the 4:00 AM wake up calls of “Dad, my bed is wet.” or “Dad, I had a nightmare.”
Then there is the night when you are so tired and you wake up unexpectedly due to an uneasy feeling…
-Not the feeling that you forgot to take the trash out for your designated day.
-Not the question of “Did I lock up all the doors before I come up to bed?”
…No, it’s the one that every parent has had, or if not, will soon… It is the one where you wake up and your four-year-old is standing there, sucking on this favorite blanket, staring at you. So close that you can feel his little breath tickle your nose. As you are a little surprised, you say, “What’s up buddy? What are you doing awake?” His little response is “Just watching you shweep.” It is in that moment that you realize three things:
1- I love these kids.
2- I’m totally exhausted.
3- “YES! I get two more hours of sleep until I have to do it all again tomorrow.”
A little more about me and my family…
We have four kids…
In 2006, our first son was born.
Two years later, in 2008, we welcomed our son.
In 2010 we had our third kind-hearted son.
And in 2012 we welcomed our baby girl.
