I really can’t believe that school is coming back already! It seems like it flew by! I wanted to share a fun idea with you, because it is a tradition that I think a lot of families would love.
My wife and I live in a neighborhood filled with kids and every year one of us hosts a “back to school bash”. We have it about two weeks before school starts and it gives the kids a chance to reconnect after a summer of being with family and not really seeing each other too much. We host it for the school-age kids that live close by and this year it was our turn.
Our plans were:
1- Have a balloon game where we fill it with school supplies that the kids need and they will throw a dart to pop the balloon.
2- Make a “superhero” back to school guy, out of ice cream treats and candy.
3- Let the kids PLAY outside, without any set schedule.
4- Have treats and drinks for the grown-ups (they socialize as much as the kids!)
5- We made sure to tell everyone to enter the Share a Little Funshine Sweepstakes
What you need (We got everything at Walmart, so it was easy):
- M&M’s® Plain 42 oz. bag
- SNICKERS® Ice Cream Bars 6-pack (my wife’s favorite!)
- Pedigree Dentastix® Original Flavor (Ok- we had a dog party, too, but they are part of the family, right?)
- Skittles® 14 oz. (to decorate a treat we will be making)
- School supplies (erasers, pencils, stickers)
- M&M’s® Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches 6-pack (you’ll use this later)
- Starburst® Original
- Food that everyone will love (We went for a Mexican dish that we know everyone would enjoy!)
- Cupcakes (they used some of the candy to decorate them)
We also picked up a huge bag of chips from a local Mexican Restaurant (I probably ate more than the rest of the guests, but they are my weakness!)
We grabbed our favorite drinks, too…
We let the kids gather around and decorate their cupcakes. They had a blast and I’m pretty sure that there was as much icing on our table as on the cupcakes, but they had fun.
Next, we sent them outside to run around a bit. They played on the blow-up slide, built a fort in our back yard, and played the balloon pop game. It is really easy.
We just filled the balloons with the school supplies, blew them up and clipped them to the fence with extra-small binder clips. The kids line up and take turns throwing plastic darts at the balloons (we had these from a dart game that the kids play).
The kids were allowed to take what was in their balloon. (Not to worry- every child got one and they were all filled the same, so even though the kids didn’t realize that, they were all equally excited!)
Don’t let me forget our other party guests. Yes, even our dog had a party! He had his friend, Max, over to our house for a Pedigree Dentastix® Original Flavor treat.
So after the kids (and dogs) played outside, we came back in to assemble our Back To School SuperHero.
You need M&M’s® Plain bag, SNICKERS® Ice Cream Bars, Skittles®, Starburst® Original, and M&M’s® Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches
Step 1: Cut the SNICKERS® Ice Cream Bars in half.
Lay out the M&M’s® Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich and attach the SNICKERS® Ice Cream Bars as legs and arms.
Take a Starburst® and flatten one to make it a mask.
Put the M&M’s® on as the eyes (You can make it stick by using a little bit of the ice cream from the M&M’s® Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich or you an make a little icing with some powdered sugar & water)
Let them decorate it with the rest of the candy.
Last stop- ENJOY!
