I have a favorite room in our house. It’s not the living room where the TV is. It’s not the office where my computer is. Its in my garage. It is the place where I have been able to make memories with my kids. It is the place where I get to talk to my Dad & Father-in-law, the men who have molded me into the Dad that I am today.
It is the place where we can keep just about anything and everything. It is the place where creative mess is allowed… and encouraged. When paint and oil are spilled and I don’t get upset. Instead it gives me a story. Like the big white mark on my garage floor happened when I was making a mud room bench. I was painting it with my son, Beau, and I kicked over a can of paint. This happened 4 years ago, but he still tells the story to his friends how dad kicked over the whole can of paint.
The thing about the garage is that because it is the place for experimenting and creating, it is also the place where chaos happens. It is the place where half-built projects remain. It is the place where bikes are left in the middle of the room. It is the place where I have to organize it every weekend with the kids.
Last week, I went to The Home Depot and bought the Rubbermaid® FastTrack® Garage Organization System, because it is a great way to clean up the garage. The rail covers give a clean, finished look & it holds up to 1,750 lbs.
We wanted it to be done by the 4th of July because the kids want to have friends over for a ‘building’ party in the garage. Plus Organizing your garage with FastTrack was an easy weekend summer project that took me about 10 minutes and helped to create more space in your garage (and maybe we can actually fit the car in there!) It works with standard 16″ or 24″ stud spacing, so it made it easy. Plus, the heavy steel construction gives extra durability.
A wide range of accessories can easily attach to the rail to create a customized garage storage system that can change as your storage needs change. Here is what I bought:
- 48 inch Wall Panel
- 48 inch RAIL
- Wall Hardware Pack (to install the wall panel)
- Rail Hardware Pack (to install the rail – for the large hooks)
- Large Hook (2pk)
- Multi-Purpose Hook
- Ladder Hook
- Utility Hook
- Don’t forget your hardware pack: 1 pack is needed to mount a 48″ rail and 2 packs are needed to mount an 84″ rail
- FastTrack® Garage Organization System, FastTrack rails are quick and easy to install. The heavy-duty screws in this FastTrack® Garage Hardware Pack will allow you to quickly and easily install FastRack® Rails into your wall. The Hardware Pack matches the color of the FastTrack® system for a consistent look.
How can you organize your garage today?
This is a great blog post. I have to say that the garage is my favorite place in the house as well. Many important conversations and some of my best memories have taken place in the garage. I just wish that my garage had more space where I could build projects.
I totally agree. I can remember as a kid spending hours eating peanuts with my Grandfather and my Great Uncle in their “Man Cave.” It is where my passion for cars and working with wood started. My kids love to just hang out there and tinker with things. I agree I wish I had some more space too.
